Product Innovation

TriCal has a 50 year history of innovative problem solving. The precise methods employed today have been developed over time, with trials, science, and ongoing investment. We focus our R&D work on product development and product application so that we are bringing worthy solutions through the vertical integration of soil fumigation.

Product Development

Product Development is ongoing as our R&D works and refines chemical formulations that are just right for tackling growers’ issues, while preserving public health, and protecting our environment. New products take years of study and trials.

Steps to Register a New Product:

While each product is different, generally it takes 10 or more years from product conception to registration. The hurdles are onerous and extensive, as they should be. Powerful soil chemistry needs to help growers overcome their crop-destroying pests, while simultaneously promoting health and safety.

  1. Dozens of studies on the potential environmental impact, including evaluations of environmental persistence and effect on wildlife. All studies must follow specific USEPA protocol guidelines and must be conducted in a lab certified as following Good Laboratory Practices.
  2. Additional audited efficacy studies and actual field trials to determine best chemical formulation and rate(s).
  3. Full report on physical and chemical characteristics, including results from product-specific studies.
  4. Submit the required toxicology data package. This is a serious process, as all precautions are taken to ensure human health and safety.
  5. Explanation of product identity & composition.
  6. Complete forms, forms, and more forms. A labor-intensive, but necessary step; we overlook nothing.
  7. Finally, completion of the product label. Product labels are now over 20 pages long, compared to one page 20 years ago. They are comprehensive – click here to see a sample label.

Product Application

It’s not just the products, but how you use them that matters. Our pursuits in better application methods have led to optimized efficacy and maximum public health and safety. While TriCal is credited with the early advancement of tarping, it was ongoing work, strategic partnerships, and new technology that led to the recent development and use of Totally Impermeable Films, or “TIF.” TIF has dramatically improved soil retention resulting in greater safety and efficacy. But it was also TriCal’s quick and thorough adoption of Good Agricultural Practices, or “GAPs”, that have led to the highest levels of performance and safety. GAPs were put in place by the USDA to ensure proper procedure, productivity, and quality. TriCal was early to adopt GAPs even before the practices became mandatory. The positive impact of GAPs in conjunction with TIF can be seen above.
